World According to Garp VHS

George Roy Hill's intermittently faithful adaptation of John Irving's best-selling novel lightens the tone of the book's black comedy while retaining at least part of its effect. It stars Robin Williams as T.S. Garp--the fatherless son of well-known eccentric feminist activist Jenny Fields (Glenn Close) who spends much of his life trying to escape the influence of his unusual upbringing and the ever-expanding shadow of his mother's fame. Intent on becoming a writer living a normal life and raising a family Garp marries college sweetheart Helen Holm (Mary Beth Hurt) and starts a family but he is plagued by the feeling he must wage war against all that is violent in the world that can possibly bring harm to them. When he finally publishes his first book his mother simultaneously publishes a feminist manifesto that makes her a lightning rod for all manner of victimized women. Among her followers is the transsexual ex-football player Roberta Muldoon (John Lithgow) a model of sanity who becomes a friend of Garp's and leads him toward a reconciliation with his mother and her cause. The briskly paced film captures much of the spirit of Irving's quirky neopicaresque novel and is well served by its stellar cast with exceptional work by Close and Lithgow.

Michael Ritchie's comedy concerns an unlikely friendship that forms between two down-on-their-luck men who have just recently lost their jobs. Donald Quinelle (Robin Williams) was fired by his boss's parrot because his boss couldn't bear to confront Donald with the terrible news. Meanwhile Sonny Paluso (Walter Matthau) lost his gas station to an explosion. Drowning their sorrows in a bar one day a criminal tries to rob the establishment. Surprising even themselves Donald and Sonny become local celebrities when they identify the perpetrator. Unfortunately this robber Jack (Jerry Reed) also happens to be a hit man and when Jack sees their faces on television his uncontrollable anger triggers him into tracking them down and making them pay for ruining his bid at scoring some quick cash. While he searches for the inept duo Donald has an awakening in which he moves to the mountains and learns to survive out in the wild. Jack's pursuit of Donald and Sonny unleashes a series of comical escapades that provide THE SURVIVORS with its biggest laughs. Not as personal a work as his 1970s comedies Ritchie's film is nonetheless an entertaining ride because of the energetic performances of Williams and Matthau.

Jack Jack

113 min. This is a New Zealand edition of Jack Rated: PG13Director: Francis Ford Coppola Starring: Robin Williams, Jennifer Lopez, Diane Lane. Color, Closed-captioned, HiFi Sound, Digital Sound Robin Williams stars as Jack, a boy who is growing normally, but at many times the normal rate. In a bizarre flashback, we see that he was born when his mother was only ten weeks pregnant. Kept out of school for years, the neighborhood children consider him a freak, and generally avoid him. He is finally required to go to public school, and we catch up to him as he enters the fourth grade for the first time, a 10-year-old boy who appears to be a fully grown man in his 40s. His classmates tease him mercilessly until they begin to see the advantages of having him around. He must also have some grown-up feelings to go along with his grown-up body, because he asks his teacher out for a date. When she refuses him, he goes off into town and gets into adult-type trouble as he courts nightclub denizen Dolores Durante (Fran Drescher) over the objections of her boyfriend. Teacher Lawrence Woodruff (Bill Cosby) tries (with some success) to help Jack cope with his situation.  We accept Visa, MasterCard, PayPal, Yahoo PayDirect, American Express, Diners Club, cashiers' checks, personal checks, money orders and cash. A two-pack of two family hits HOOK and LITTLE WOMEN. HOOK (PG): Director Steven Spielberg brings J.M. Barrie's PETER PAN to the screen with a delightfully modernized twist. The film received an Academy Award nomination for Best Song for John Williams's When You're Alone. LITTLE WOMEN (PG): The fourth screen adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's classic 1869 novel LITTLE WOMEN is given a realistic and rounded treatment by screenwriter Jo Swicord and Australian director Gillian Armstrong whose perspective emphasizes a feminist tone. The story chronicles the lives of a mother and four daughters and their daily toils during the Civil War in the absence of their father a Union army chaplain. Winona Ryder (in an Oscar-nominated performance) is vibrant as Jo the least conventional of the sisters. Christian Bale captures the ebullience of their neighbor Laurie whose company Jo enjoys so much it seems inevitable that they will end up together. Kirsten Dunst (at age 12) gives a fiery performance as the younger Amy proving even more willful than Jo Claire Danes brings a mysterious otherworldliness to Beth. LITTLE WOMEN touchingly rendered has many subtle moments and an appropriately moving visual sense to accompany the narrative. Susan Sarandon and Gabriel Byrne also star in this well-crafted film.
